Introduction
Big Idea: Jesus came to purify and preserve biblical marriage in a culture of unbiblical divorce.
1. What Were the Pharisees Teaching About Divorce & Remarriage? [Matthew 5:31]
- Rabbi Shammei’s View: Divorce only for unchastity
- Rabbi Hillel’s View: Divorce for trivial offenses
2. What Did Jesus Say About Divorce & Remarriage? [Matthew 5:32]
- God’s design is for permanent commitment in marriage.
- Jesus opposes divorce on demand.
- Unbiblical divorce complicates sin; it doesn’t cure it.
- Remarriage after an unbiblical divorce constitutes adultery.
- Sexual immorality destroys the marriage bond and is a biblical ground for divorce.
3. How Should We Address Common Issues in Divorce & Remarriage?
