Introduction
Big Idea: As prophet and sage, Jesus offers and invites us into the way of being in the world–repentant disciples who resemble God–that will result in our true and full blessing now and in the age to come.
1. The Blessedness of Revelation [Matthew 5:1–2]
- A Deliberate Distinction: Crowds & Disciples
- An Authoritative Ascent: New Moses
- A Striking Structure: Commendation, Character/Condition, & Comfort
- A Blessed Balance: Present Assurance & Future Hope
2. The Blessedness of Repentance [Matthew 5:3–6]
- Blessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs [Mt. 5:3]
- Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted [Mt. 5:4]
- Blessed are the humble, for they will inherit the earth [Mt. 5:5]
- Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled [Mt. 5:6]
3. The Blessedness of Resemblance [Matthew 5:7–12]
- Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy [Mt. 5:7]
- Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God [Mt. 5:8]
- Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God [Mt. 5:9]
