Introduction
Big Idea: Jesus came to purify our desires so that we may prefer his good design in this life and God himself in the life to come.
1. The Disastrous Deed of Adultery [Matthew 5:27]
- Adultery Disobeys God’s Gracious Command [Exod. 20:14; Deut. 5:18]
- Adultery Distorts God’s Good Design [Gen. 2; Ezek. 16; 23; Eph. 5:22–33]
- Adultery Despises God’s Governing Authority [Mt. 19:4–6; Heb. 13:4]
2. The Dangerous Desire of Lust [Matthew 5:28]
- Lust Is a Prompted Looking that Ignites the Heart
- Lust Is a Prolonged Looking that Looks and Looks Again
- Lust Is a Purposeful Looking that Intends to Covet What Is Not Yours
- Lust Is a Pernicious Looking that Preys to Feast on Someone Else
3. The Drastic Devotion to Purity [Matthew 5:29–30]
- Resort to Christ to be Made Alive [Heb. 9:14]
- Realize the Eternal Destiny for Allegiance to Sin [Mt. 5:29–30]
- Reflect on the Temporal Consequences of Sin in Advance [Prov. 5:11–14]
- Remove Access to Sources of Temptation [Prov. 5; 7]
- Reduce Your Flesh’s Appetite [Prov. 23:1–3; 1 Pet. 2:11]
- Renew Your Affections with the Gospel [Ps. 37:4]
- Resist the Temptation to Fight Alone [Jas. 5:16]
- Rehearse the Promises of God’s Admiration [Mt. 5:8]
- Remember That If You Do Sin, You Have an Advocate [1 Jn. 2:2]
